Russian coders blocked from contributing to FOSS tools
- stefantalpalaru 4y ago[dead]
- washadjeffmad 4y agoI was told by a colleague yesterday that one of the highly specialized scientific softwares they rely on is no longer available at their university because the developers are Russian. The devs are not state assets and don't support war. They're just regular citizens and experts in their fields, like you or me. This is the sort of high pressure, low impact isolation tactic that tends to backfire as it escalates. Already, they've contacted the developers to apologize and request temporary licenses to run on their home computers.
- maximinus_thrax 4y ago> The devs are not state assets and don't support war. How do you know that? Did you personally vet them? Anyway, does it really matter? There's a series of sanctions in place. Same as with North Korea or Cuba. Their (more or less elected) government decided it was a good idea to join the ranks for pariah nations, so cry me a river about the 'innocent' regular citizens. If they're against the war, they should know why they're marginalized and then do something about it.
