German (and most other non-US) companies offer much lower compensations for devs than US companies. This is an aspect that I find most often overlooked in the complaints about tough US dev interviews. The compensation for US devs is extremely high, both compared to other US jobs, and to non-US dev jobs. The FAANG get literally millions of applications per year, so the interviews must be setup to fail the vast majority of applicants.
- bradlys 4y agoYeah, the whole reason these practices even exist in the US is purely due to compensation. If the compensation was lower - no one would bother. This is why you see companies that do these practices but don't pay FAANG wages having a much harder time hiring - while FAANG never has any problems hiring ever.
- RamblingCTO 4y agoMight be, sure. But we have social security, lower costs of living and stuff like that. We need to compare real compensation plus other soft factors like happiness, feeling of security etc. Also talking about the top 1% is not that interesting, because most companies behaving like they are FAANG just aren't FAANG ;) /edit: but I agree that wages need to increase in Europe overall for developers!
