My view of the job market might be skewed, because I'm twenty-odd years into my career, and the people that are looking to hire me and often different than the people looking to hire a recent CS grad.
That being said, I wonder how much of this is just that people who have a bad interview experience are more likely to post about it than someone who has a "normal" experience.
Like you, I had one interview, when I was fairly new out of college, where they asked me how many golf balls it would take to fill a school bus. I've had a handful of interviews where I've been asked to do some live-coding; these were all less than two hours.
I've never been asked to go through six rounds of interviews, or do a take-home test, or tell them which color dragon my code is. Of course, I intentionally avoid FAANG, which is where I hear about a lot of this dumb-assery.
- gregjor 4y agoSame, I have avoided FAANG for a long time (I worked for Apple decades ago). At my age I don't have patience for nonsense. I freelance and work through an agency that vets clients for me, I never interview. Either I deliver or I don't charge for my time, simple. I stopped applying and using recruiters and going through the interview process a long time ago. I get jobs and gigs through contacts and reputation. That doesn't necessarily work for people starting their career, I understand, but if enough of us said no to these stupid interview processes maybe companies would stop using them.
