I actually noticed that started happening in Europe. Last month I had a similar experience, where a mobile startup wanted to hire me as a mobile developer, but wanted to test me, and the test was to implement a new feature and screen of their existing app released on the App Store.. I aced it, they were more than pleased, yet in the end they did not hire me as they said that they are actually closing the position because of the market downturn. At least they gave me a 50€ amazon gift card..
