ChatGPT Has Submitted a Pull Request to Rails
- IIAOPSW 4y ago[flagged]
- thrill 4y ago<tortoises having sex barking sounds>
- symlinkk 4y agoFrom the diff it looks like they already had a test case for this? Is this actually adding anything new?
- NameError 4y agoMy reading of the PR is that previously, anything <=72 unicode characters was accepted, and they've changed it to limit to 72 bytes regardless of the actual number of characters (as some chars are >1 byte)
- KennyFromIT 4y agoI do not believe this is the first PR made by a LLM, is it? If not, why is this notable?
- HeavyFeather 4y agoHow? ChatGPT did not send the PR and cannot ingest a whole repo. I assume the author picked and fed it the 4 affected files, making it less “ChatGPT submitted a PR” and more “I used ChatGPT to write this code and text” which is pretty ordinary right now.
- beebmam 4y ago> How? It didn't. This is clickbait.
- warent 4y agoDoesn't "ordinary" seem a bit of an exaggeration considering such things weren't even possible up until recently? It might be clickbait, but good grief, how can we already be this disenchanted with what is a miraculous technology.
- xiphias2 4y agoJust because it wasn't possible recently, it's normal now for everybody. I prefer Copilot, and wouldn't ever want to go back. World is changing super fast.
- HeavyFeather 4y agoI know it sounds funny, but GPT-4 could already probably swallow the whole repo and propose a whole patch and gh-cli command to actually do the thing nearly by itself. I’m just here waiting for a “Fix issue” button on GitHub tickets, then I’ll be impressed again, for a week.
- dpkirchner 4y agoYeah, it's pretty clear that the PR was co-authored by ChatGPT.
- yazaddaruvala 4y agoI'm waiting for the headline that brings all the HN darlings (past and present) together: "ChatGPT rewrites Rails in Rust! All the tests are passing and its submissions are at the top of Techempower's benchmarks"
- none_to_remain 4y ago> These changes improve the overall user experience and maintain compatibility with BCrypt's limitations. Isn't this fundamentally a vulnerability, if a minor one? And then someone asks > awesome demonstration of ChatGPT capabilities! But ChatGPT is a proprietary tool, couldn't there be any legal issues with code ownership after accepting such a patch? and apparently the submitter used that as a GPT query and posted the response. As the man said, "I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question."
- zxexz 4y agoWhile I guess this is kind-of interesting, where did the title of the post come from? All I’m seeing here is somebody used ChatGPT to write some code and a pull request. Even the person opening the PR says “Co-authored-by: ChatGPT”. Maybe the title should be changed?
