Gut feelings: why drugs that nurture your microbes; the future of mental health
- FollowingTheDao 4y agoWithout knowing a person's genetics they are playing with fire here. I am a FUT2 non-secretor. This effects my gut and dictates what I need in my diet (Fucose (not fructose)). Only 20% of Caucasians are FUT2 non-secretors but that is a lot. When I take any pro- or pre-biotics...well...look out!
- hresvelgr 4y agoI recently made some dietary changes to deal with IBS. I had no idea I was in persistent bowel discomfort until it just disappeared. I'm used to IBS flair-ups but when it settled I didn't realise I still felt malaise. When it was gone, I felt healthy and well. Weirdly, I felt more emotionally stable than I have in years. Then I came across a study[1] that indicated that several genes associated with IBS also correlated with mood and anxiety disorders. - Llamamoe 4y agoWith how rampant antibiotic use is, how undertreated GI issues are, and how much we've normalized feeling miserable all the time, it wouldn't surprise me if most people had a bad gut microbiome. For several years now, I've been suffering from fatigue after eating, as well as persistent malaise and brain fog that go away completely after a 16+ hour fast. It's wild how ill I've gotten used to feeling. Regrettably, I'm a very low-functioning person, and struggling to find a solution that works for me. Dietary changes and probiotics only lighten the severity a little. I'd love to get an FMT, but.
