- elmerfud 4y agoI think it's less about merging early or late it's about idiots not pushing on the damn gas pedal and matching speed. Too often in following some idiot in mosey mode never getting above 45 but trying to cut in front of traffic going 70-80. Only once they merge do they bother to speed up. These are the same clueless rude, entitled people who go out to dinner with their civil air raid siren of a baby, or shouting in to their phone on an elevator. They have no clue how their actions impact those around them and their ignorant rudeness is infectious.
- necovek 4y agoWhile matching speeds makes for the smoothest (and easiest) merging, increasing speed without having enough runway is a risk unto itself not everyone is willing to take (as they might need to hard brake if an opening does not show up in time). It's also obvious you've not been around babies or small kids lately. Just like adults, sometimes they are wonderful, and sometimes they are fussy. The biggest difference is that adults (usually) know and can verbalize when they don't feel their best, whereas babies can't. But parents can't know in advance how their babies will feel, so if you've got a problem with that, I think it's best you stay at home since you don't think it's acceptable for babies to exist and be babies in public. And it's funny that someone so unsympathetic about others' driving style can be taking such a high ground.
- elmerfud 4y agoOne if the amazing things about cars is acceleration and breaking at balanced, and that highway engineers understand the abilities of cars as do manufacturers and the acceleration lanes are appropriately long. People pussy foot their cars because they've never been taught how they work. If you've matched speeds there's always a gap because your relative velocity to the other cars is zero thus even small spaces are easy to move into. Whereas when you're afraid to push on the gas pedal and get to the speed that traffic is moving at prior to the end of the acceleration lane those gaps look very very small because your relative velocity can be a difference of 20 to 30 mph. I understand that about babies because I've had kids. What you fail at understanding is just because your kid is screaming there's no need to subject everyone else around you too this disruption in a public space. A polite person who cannot calm their child would simply leave to avoid subjecting everyone else to this. Obviously you believe that it's okay to be rude to everyone else around you you are exactly the kind of person that I'm talking about that has no awareness. On the other hand though you take offense at my statement therefore you value your opinion as only being right and see no value in mind so the hypocrisy is great within you. My guess is you probably use violence to suppress those who have differing opinions that you consider fascist. Because that's the hypocritical viewpoint that you're supporting right now.
- necovek 4y agoHaha, I love the conjecture you come up with: lead with such an aggressive tone without a hint of empathy toward your fellow humans and finish with how I am likely to use violence. Sure, you totally got that right.

- mytailorisrich 4y agoHere in the UK, I've noticed that it depends on how 'order' emerges in such situation. Usually cars take turns merging. Fine. But where does that happen? If for whatever reason this started to happen early, i.e. well before the lane closes, (and that seems mostly an emerging behaviour depending on where the first driver decided to merge) then most people will continue merging at that point with few people 'daring' to keep on driving on the lane until it actually closes, and those who do that will be seen as jumping the queue.
- theGnuMe 4y agoThe merge should take place at the last possible moment. They call this the zipper.
