I've said some really dumb things in my life, and if I "stood by" them I would have prevented myself from growing past those ideas enough to realize how dumb they were. If, on reflection, you genuinely believe something that risks some "cancel"-like consequences, then by all means stand by it if that feels right. But if you have believed something, but have doubts now: reflect, re-assess, and then apologize (if needed) and move on. Life should always have growth and learning.
