Any VW-approved diagnostic tool can recode the battery. Allegedly (I haven't personally had need to try it yet) the ODBEleven (https://obdeleven.com/en/ https://obdeleven.com/en/) can do so. It IS incredibly silly that you need a specialized tool to code the new battery, but unfortunately that's the direction the auto industry seems to be going.

Yes OBDEleven can code the battery in your VW.
