What does the notation x><x denote?
- PaulHoule 4y agoThese are the "ket" and "bra", that is x is a coordinate (in the case of my thesis work it's a vector comprising of both the p position and the q momentum) and the <x| and |x> are the quantum states that correspond to the particle either starting out or ending at those coordinates. It's completely ordinary for the "x" to be either position or momentum. The point is that you can analyze a quantum state by breaking it up into the quantum states over every "x" and then integrate them to recover the original state and you don't lose anything... the probably that something, anything happens is equal 1. When quantum states are destroyed the probability of anything happening is less than 1 which just makes no sense at all.
