Doing away with the sim card has almost no benefit for the end user and is taking people back to the dark days of CDMA phones. The idea that your service is not tied to your physical phone is critical to the core ideas of freedom.
People have forgotten the past where land line companies required you to have a phone purchased from them. Cell phone companies absolutely want to bring back those days and Apple the leader in vendor lock-in is happy to help them. As you sit in your posh first world countries and think what's the problem... You're the problem thinking your needs are the only needs.
The ability to pop a card out and in to another phone without contacting anyone should be the normal way we do things. When I leave a country I can just hand card to any local and they're happy to use the remaining data... because honestly texting is not a thing I've ever really seen outside the USA. It's always app based communication like WhatsApp.
This is total foolishness. At minimum if the esim can't be moved with NFC, while the phone is powered off then it's dumb. Because drop your phone and break it so it won't power on... Move a card. Done.
