because how else will bad managers know people they manage are working?
- postalrat 4y agoBad manager isn't an excuse you get to use for not working. Coworkers are depending on you.
- SketchySeaBeast 4y agoThere's a difference between real and performative work. Bad managers only look for one of those.
- robertlagrant 4y agoA true Scotsman would never commit such a logical fallacy.
- SketchySeaBeast 4y agoI don't think that's a fair comparison - I'm not saying that there is no such thing as real work - there absolutely it. Real work is collaborating to get a goal accomplished. Performative work is sitting at your desk at 4pm on Friday even though no one has done any work since noon because the long weekend is coming up, or sitting in the 3rd meeting in the week that's about the same topic that no one has bothered expanding their knowledge upon since the first meeting.
- robertlagrant 4y agoI'm saying the no true Scotsman is on your definition of bad manager, as though they can only recognise performative work.
- yunohn 4y agoThis thread makes me think you’ve never worked at a corporate company or FAANG.
- robertlagrant 4y agoI'm pretty sure at least some people who've worked at corporate companies or FAANGs can spot fallacies!
- yunohn 4y agoThere is no value in labelling fallacies, unless you have a legitimate point to make outside of being contrarian.
- robertlagrant 4y agoMy point remains that bad managers can spot real work as well. I find it a little ironic that your purely contrarian approach would include levelling that accusation at me. I've tried to keep it light-hearted, but I think I've tried enough.
- tablespoon 4y ago> Bad manager isn't an excuse you get to use for not working. Coworkers are depending on you. Correction: Unless you're working in some kind of cooperative, which you almost certainly are not, it's actually the shareholders who are depending on you. Your coworkers only depend on you to the extent that they're also dedicated to serving the shareholders.
- postalrat 4y agoAnd it's the people who don't want to work that should set the pace?

- KyeRussell 4y agoThis luke-warm take doesn’t make you look like the enlightened individuals you think it does. - Not everyone likes working fully remote. - Not all work is best done remotely. - Some situations require micromanagement. - Some people need the sort of hands-on in-person management to have them achieve their best. All of these things justify office space, and all of them can be true without invalidating your very apparent personal preference toward fully remote work. None of these points are particularly hot takes. Just the realities of the workplace instead of me being blinded by my personal desires for how things should be. It’d be great if none of these were true. As a remote employee myself, personally save me a lot of travel time. But I can’t just close my eyes and write snarky Hacker News comments and magic it into reality.
