The entire nuclear industry would be better off if we had a greater focus on reprocessing and efficiency over wasteful storage like this. It’s a damn shame we put prodigious efforts into mining and enrichment only to waste all the remaining energy of these fuels by arbitrarily dumping them after a certain percentage of contaminants has built up. The anti nuclear boogeymen ins general and the corresponding anti-proliferation arguments against breeder reactors are partially responsible for the existence of this waste in the first place. If they didn’t campaign against reprocessing and reactors that could burn it up, then it wouldn’t be sitting there in need of a long term waste storage facility to keep it in. I’m aware there’s an element of circular reason here but I’m mainly trying to highlight how wasteful the USA’s stance on spent nuclear fuel is.
