My parents bought a paper, now you can subscribe to a newspaper site and get access to more news stories than you'd care to read. We paid a license fee for having a TV (in the UK) which was about the same I now pay for Netflix (though if you still live in the UK you have to pay both, but I'd happily pay for access to the BBC). I used to spend a lot more on CDs and get access to far less music than Spotify.
So my argument is that these subscriptions are better value for the money, provided you're sensible about it and don't subscribe to things you don't get value from.
