I read this earlier, it's unfortunate they lead with Holmes because the article has almost nothing to do with her but is about the unfortunate way inarcerated pregnant women are treated before and after they hab their kids.
If you consider the primary goal of prison to be rehabilitation, it makes no sense to treat women with new children as described in the article. It seems like an issue that other countries (than the US) have come up with decent solution to, that should get more attention, and should be to my read bipartisan.
If nothing else consider giving money to the organization mentioned in the article (but no linked for some reason): https://girlsembracingmothers.org/support/give/ https://girlsembracingmothers.org/support/give/
- wkdneidbwf 4y ago> If you consider the primary goal of prison to be rehabilitation at least in the us, this is the problem. it’s not about rehab, it’s about punishment and dissuasion. and it still fails there because it’s a for-profit system preying on the most vulnerable and most desperate members of society.
- ultrarunner 4y agoAnd it's clear that the dissuasion is not working— the US has the second largest incarcerated population in the world, second only to China (though the US rate of incarceration is significantly higher). I would submit that the primary goal of the US prison system is to continue to operate with the most power and highest level of profit possible. To that end it seems to be performing relatively well.
- dahdum 4y agoI'm curious what rehabilitation looks like for Holmes? Is it just abstaining from future confidence schemes? What about SBF? Not stealing billions more?
- hd95489 4y agoYeah honestly both of them deserve the death penalty as they stole many lifetimes with of work and value
- wkdneidbwf 4y agothis is a good point. i don’t know either. for these types of crimes i’m not sure that rehab is viable.
- throwaway81523 4y ago> If you consider the primary goal of prison to be rehabilitation, Supposedly in California, the official purpose changed from rehabilitation to punishment in 1977: https://www.kqed.org/lowdown/775/the-law-that-help-pack-californias-prisons https://www.kqed.org/lowdown/775/the-law-that-help-pack-cali... I don't claim that's a good thing, but Holmes is faced with the prison system that exists in reality, doing what it it officially intended to do. Although, since Holmes will be in federal rather than CA prison, I don't know whether the same law applies.
- hd95489 4y agoThere is no rehab for Holmes she could have easily been any other functional member of society, she’s just happened to be a scammer that got caught that needs punishment
