ChatGPT-powered E-ink clock writes a new poem every minute
- ThrowawayTestr 4y agoThis just makes me wish e-ink displays were as cheap as the API calls that pi is making.
- KMnO4 4y agoI actually found a half dozen Kobo ereaders (Canadian version of the Kindle; hackable with Linux) for $5. I only picked up one since I didn’t know what to do with 6, but for $5 it’s a great little eink weather station.
- acomjean 4y agoThere was a song about a robot that wrote poetry. “Jed’s other poem (beautiful ground)” by granddaddy. Its video was done on an apple 2, with a code listing at the end. Takes a little while to get going.. https://youtu.be/Gxe40xXQKko https://youtu.be/Gxe40xXQKko
- sho_hn 4y agoVery nice! I did an E-ink DIY project with ChatGPT and Rust recently as well, using it for newspaper article trimming and style transfer: https://imgur.com/a/NoTr8XX https://imgur.com/a/NoTr8XX (I've posted this in HN comments before; album now has some pics with the finished newspaper in situ at my home.) What's up with those rectangular artifacts on your panel?
- KMnO4 4y agoThis is neat. Looks like the author wants to manufacture this as a product, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to be honest. The novelty of this is using an LLM to make pithy poems. There are under 1500 minute in a day, so the obvious optimization is to pre-generate the poems. You could even do dozens of variations for each minute and you probably wouldn’t ever notice repeats. Then you would store the poems in flash and the entire device would be standalone, without being connected to the internet. And in that case, the project doesn’t bring anything new to the table since it’s fairly trivial to write a poem like that without AI.
- bjtitus 4y agoWould make a lot of sense with more data inputs. Current weather, calendar, holidays, news, etc. could all be injected to customize the responses.
- elaus 4y agoI absolutely love the idea, but I wonder if this is a good use case for e-ink screens. With content changing every minute, this would mean 1440 screen refreshs a day. Not sure how this affects the lifetime of the display and the energy consumption compared to an AMOLED screen for example.
