I'm almost certain that many, many times in history we've been afraid of new things... and those things had bad consequences for millions of people for decades, while benefiting a minority of people, with mixed result at the end.
The way industrial revolution happened did "crushed" million of people for decades for example...
Even the impact of tractors (the way we used it), which seems consensual, are much more mixed than what you say, suppressing millions of job (often without direct replacement), and leading to agricultural practices that decreased the production per hectare (!), required more chemical product with questionable impacts, soil quality decreasing...
We are not all in the same boat... the same change can crush million of people and make the life more agreeable for million of people
