Nothing a company does is free to them. To expect them to provide a free service at all, let alone one with high costs associated with it, is not reasonable. They don't owe the world free service, same for any other company.
- twblalock 4y agoWhen you offer something for free and then suddenly start charging for it, you are jerking around your customers -- especially when you do it with such confusing and incomplete communication as Docker has provided in this instance. This is effectively a long-term bait and switch. This is not ok.
- kuratkull 4y agoIf a company offers something for free, it's likely part of their business plan. However, if they start charging for that feature, users may feel uneasy. Digital Ocean offers a container repo for $5/month, so users may be upset about the perceived mismatch between price and features. Users not paying signals that the company has failed in its business strategy. Additionally, the repo hosting service has weak vendor lock-in, making it easy for users to switch providers. Businesses must be mindful of user feedback and work hard to retain customer loyalty in a competitive market.
