Wow! Looks like they're determined to catch up!
They're going to open up PaLM & an image generation model (imagen?) through Google Cloud. It looks incredibly easy to finetune PaLM in their environment:

- bluelightning2k 4y agoI don't know that catch-up is entirely fair. My understanding is that Google has always been ahead (at least until recently) - but the difference is that one of their competitors ships. OpenAI has a bias to action. DeepMind has a bias to grand-challenge stunts. Google has a bias to perpetual validation.
- sebzim4500 4y agoI think 'catch-up' is a fair description if Google Brain/Deepmind have until now shipped nothing and their competitors have shipped something.
- Workaccount2 4y agoWhen you have nothing at stake, like openAI or bing, its easy to just throw things at the wall and see what sticks. There is nothing else on the wall you could potentially knock off.
- sebzim4500 4y agoI don't see why Google is in a materially different situation with AI than Microsoft is. It's not like anyone is suggesting that Google should have shut down their search in order to launch something like this, if it fails then it joins the long line of dead products.
