Passive co-founder, no proactivity,coding
passive co-founder behaviour.
Hi, I have an issue with a co-founder.
Prestory: I had idea, was looking for cofounder, found a technical person who can code. Shared 50/50 for a startup equity. It took some time, we build 1st version of product, had some clients, then paused. And last year revampted the product and have a new product now.
Problem: I have impression that I am the only person who motivated him and us, who has ideas. I setup landing page, product roadmap, notion project pages, I look for clients, conduct demos, create a demo script. recently I decided we need to new hosting ( amazon).
Last year we had some turbulance because of that and I almost led to break up, because it was frustrating me.
My mistake that I have ignored that before.
Last year we talked, he said the startup is important, but he works only on weeknd on that.
Now it has been anotehr year, and again I am in the same place, feeling like I always need to push and that if I woud not write to him, he will not do it himself. e.q. I initiated moving to new hosting, scheduled calls with amazon and consultants. And him being technical < I expect him to write at least some emails. But again it is me, who is cinducting communication. And asking him, if he seen email from amazon with instruction how we should proceed.
So, I understand it is not how I want the work look like. I taked to him last year ( hard conversation, seemed to be improved), but now it is the same. We have a beta product, which we can publish on appsumo and producthunt and move forward. But I feel like I am burnedout and scared to move even further.
Maybe it makes sense stop Now, do not waste time and just tell him, we stop woking, sell the product and I just move on, find aotehr cofoudner and create a better porudct from scratch.
I am lost and maybe there is someone who can advise me. even during the call, he says I am coding.
I love being the way I am- proactive, but my energy cant be enough for both, especially when there are hard times finding clients and some difficulties.
- al2o3cr 4y agorecently I decided we need to new hosting followed by And asking him, if he seen email from amazon with instruction how we should proceed. Sounds like you don't want a co-founder, you want an employee. Problem: I have impression that I am the only person who motivated him and us, who has ideas. I'm personally not a fan of the "idea founder + code founder" setup, but you chose it so that's the way it works...
- miak 4y agowell,I did not. Initially we agreed that tehre is a CEO and CTO, 50/50 relationships. However indeed the problem is that if I won't write/ call him for example for a week or two or three, he would not do any step to contact me somehow. hats why I offered to have weekly calls, so we can be aligned. However once we implemenetd weekly calls, I am the only perosn who prepared for them, makes the agenda and offers topics and ways to grow a startup or a product/ features. I mean If I go silent, hes kinda... making no reaction.only shows up for a wekely call or writes to me when he needs to postpone it. I created a roadmap in Notion for us so we can manage tasks, and bugs and requets there, but he does not even update it, nor he prioratise it. he does not even add new things. For example if I have a call/demo with a client- I let him know, he know when. But for some reason he never asks how it went, or what happend or what info we got. It is always me. I did an experiment, I had a demo call informed him. But I decided I will not write anything myself, will wait maybe he would show interest, call me or aks on chat. Nothin for 4 days,so I just contatced him myslesf. It hard for me when someone s so passive. I do not undestand if it is normal maybe, and I am overarcting. He never participated at any demo call himslef... I just realised that. he never tried.
- brudgers 4y agoHow much money are each of you taking home each week? If you are not the technical person, your job is to make the technical person rich. If they are only working on weekends, that's a result of lack of success for the non-technical cofounder. Good luck.
