After reading the comments on this thread I decided to give wezterm a try today. It's safe to say that I probably won't be going back to kitty or alacritty any time soon! Such a pleasant experience to configure with lots of very sane defaults. The only things I added were the open-http-links-in-browser binding I found in the comments here, and a quick select matcher for sha256-* strings for when I'm updating manually packaged things in my Nix config.
