A story I heard while working on Kernel and Drivers at MS, is that this acronym originally stood for "Another Fucking Driver", named by Dave Cutler once a kernel engineer told him that it was necessary and asked him for a good name. Obviously before they shipped, they needed to come up with a more Palatable name, so "Auxiliary function driver" was the name they came up with.
