Personal ~ton cars are a rich people luxury (1.5G cars for 8G people), and it's likely to get worse in the future : peak oil seems to be about now unless there is another (even dirtier !) revolution like tight oil / oil sands, while electric cars can't be scaled up fast enough to even replace existing cars.
