I think to many neovim users, the term is absolutely synonymous. I don’t know anyone that prefers the feature set of vim to neovim at this point. The benefit of vim/vi is that you will probably have it on most unix systems by default. This comment will probably be a bat signal for vim users though.

Should definitely not be synonymous, it just confuses people.

  Hah, I agree it's confusing. And it's funny you mention it, because even though I said vim, I use neonvim.

  Unfortunately words evolve over time whether we like it or not. For example how in many contexts "crypto" now refers to cryptocurrencies instead of cryptography.
