Bringing the Cotton Fragments to Life
- ggm 4y agoI love the modern, non-destructive archeology world. As a child I was given C.W. Ceram's book "The Story of Archaeology" [1] as a gift (his name is pseudonymous because of his prior involvement in propaganda for the nazi regime) and it talks about how the early heiroglyphic and scroll readers would cut the "cigar" of papyrus open with a razor and re-assemble such words as they could from the wreakage. This technique is much better. It's amenable to so many contexts. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gods,_Graves_and_Scholars https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gods,_Graves_and_Scholars
