I think the reason that the internet is a cesspool of privacy invading malware and fraud is because of get rich quick schemes. Basically the same thing that's affecting the majority of the cryptocurrency use. That's why there's always clickbait sites and auto generated content dominating search results and you're constantly being recommended crappy sponsored videos with no real content in them. It's not that people don't want to pay for things or they don't expect the pay for things. It's that most people don't know how to run a legitimate business but running a get rich quick scheme that's another ballpark.
