I worked at a large company which had a mix between open plan desks and cubicles, and teams would take a cluster of nearby "semicles". I think that arrangement is a good balance between being able to put your headphones on and focus on your work with a bit of privacy, but also being able to turn your chair around and brainstorm things or quickly chat to an architect, etc.
