There is a difference between having sympathy or empathy and agreeing with the idea of socializing the loss here. I don't think many will argue that this is a "good" thing or that they are "happy" to see ppl suffer (some might but they generally are a fringe group) but agreeing that a situation sucks doesn't mean you are willing to take a bullet to fix it. I get the sense that most people are more in the camp of: "Yeah that sucks, hope it works out for you and maybe think about the risks more next time"
