Linux 6.4 Slated to Start Removing Old, Unused and Unmaintained Pcmcia Drivers

- AdamJacobMuller 4y agoSad but an obviously correct choice. USB-C/USB3/Thunderbolt/USB-3.2 SuperSpeed 4x4 is obviously a better choice for literally everything, nothing quite beat the chunkiness of a PCMCIA card. The creative ways people made attachments work (e.g. a pop-out connector for an rj45/rj11 port) was great.
- duffyjp 4y agoNormally I'm sad to see old hardware support removed, but the last time I actually used a PCMCIA card was CF card reader on a G4 Powerbook. Newer laptops I've owned have had them but why would use it? Everything is built on or a USB dongle away. Good move in my book.
- 2000UltraDeluxe 4y agoI don't think I've used PCMCIA since my Amiga 600. It was also quite popular for Wifi cards about 20 years ago. But yeah, good call. No reason to support it in new kernels.
- steponlego 4y agoRust can’t handle PCMCIA?
- snvzz 4y agoThis pointless PCMCIA removal (don't touch it if not broken, typical Linux) is going to leave many machines w/o a NIC.
