I feel like this is the real disconnect. I wonder how much of the current situation can be attributed to malfeasance in commercial architecture. A huge amount of office layouts are simply inhumane. Take this floor plan [0] I found by searching for "commercial space with private office floor plans" for example. There are cubes with workers' backs positioned literally 3ft from a door to an occupied room.
When I position a desk in spaces I control, I point my back away from doors, windows, and walkways. Literally every cubicle or open office floor plan I've seen in practice seems to explicitly do the opposite. What fluffy things architects or executives have to say about collaboration is irrelevant imo, you are indisputably more physically vulnerable in positions with your back exposed. Some part of me is always trying to be aware of what's happening behind me and it kills my focus. I don't actually fear violence in such situations it's just a reflex.
