Encryption doesn't necessarily make a system more secure. For many normal desktop users data integrity is more important than full-disk encryption. Data integrity and encryption are principally opposed to each other and create a trade-off. Encryption adds many additional points of failure and makes data recovery hard, sometimes even impossible. I would recommend full-disk encryption for most laptop users who carry their laptop with them, though.
