I believe Elon Musk issued this non-apology in an attempt to avoid a lawsuit after openly admitting to firing someone due to their disability.
This is in line with his character based on the way he has treated other people.
- dang 4y agoEdit: the parent comment has been edited in a misleading way. It originally read: > 'I would like to not lose another lawsuit' Musk is such a trash person I would not have replied if the current text had been your original comment. Editing your comment in a way that deprives replies of context (and indeed makes them seem totally inappropriate) is not cool, so please don't. --- original reply --- Ok, but please don't post unsubstantive comments to Hacker News. You may not owe persons who you feel are trash better, but you owe this community better if you're participating in it. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

- cmh89 4y agoI felt my original comment was substantative. I received feedback from you that you disagreed. I changed it to elaborate on my original comment and make it more substantive, based on your feedback. This feels like a no-win situation for me. It also feels pretty arbitrary. Comments like this "Surrogate father for 20yo hustle bros." In this post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35057257#35059060 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35057257#35059060 isn't hidden nor modded down, but it's far lower effort and not hidden. I've seen anti-Semitic posts not get hidden. Your comment felt really out of left field. You told me my comment wasn't up to standard, so I changed it, which I guess I wasn't supposed to do. Sorry
- dang 4y agoYou're right that HN moderation is inconsistent. To be consistent we would have to read everything, and we can't do that—not even close—there's just far too much content here. So when you see a post that ought to have been moderated but hasn't been, the likeliest explanation is that we didn't see it [1]. You can help by flagging it or emailing us at hn@ycombinator.com. I agree with you about https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35059060 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35059060 and have flagged it and posted a scolding. As for anti-Semitic comments, I've personally banned plenty of accounts for posting like that. HN doesn't get a lot of it, but it does get some; any fringe view is going to show up at least somewhat on any sufficiently large open internet forum. As for your edit - it was a good edit in principle! But it left my moderation reply looking pointless and stupid, and that got me irritated. Anyone who came along later would look at that and think the mod was being an asshole. I'm sorry if my irritation came across—I try not to let it, but not always successfully!
