College Should Be More Like Prison

- quantified 4y agoLove the title. If only the motivated and disciplined went to university in the US, enrollment would shrink dramatically.
- shevy-java 4y agoIt's better than doing nothing, but to say that people need to be deprived of their freedom in order to learn something, says a LOT about a society.
- bell-cot 4y agoIs there any business, however benevolent, that offers even 1% of the "immediately gratifying alternatives to actually working" to its 18- to 25-year-old employees that a trendy modern college campus does? With never a bothersome manager around, to suggest that working a bit might be wiser than spending yet another long day enjoying the amenities? I didn't think so.
- quantified 4y agoThey don't need to be. But the richer a group is, the less motivated they need to be. They have so many options and the difference between an A being studious and a B with lots of partying isn't as big to many of them. The ones that are on a mission for themselves, they'll do well. The ones that go because that's what they've been told to do, not so much. Prisoners are also adults. I've never done time but it seems like they'd be serious about the opportunities that present themselves, which are extremely few.
- shevy-java 4y ago> Never have I been more grateful to teach where I do: at a men’s maximum-security prison. Why would you be proud to teach in a place where people were stripped of their freedom? That means the education system is broken, if you think this is a better place than regular schools, universities and what not. So perhaps fix the latter; as well as the former.
