GPUI: the GPU-accelerated UI framework powering Zed
- billconan 4y agowill GPUI be open-sourced? I'm also implementing a GUI system for text-dense applications. After researching different options, I currently use GPU to render Quadratic curves. I subdivide cubical curves into quadratic curves with CPU and cache the resulting geometry. Also, I hope to learn more about the font fallback implementation in a future post. i.e. what platform native libraries to use on each platform to find available fonts? And what's the logic behind finding a close font fallback?
- maxbrunsfeld 4y agoYes, we do plan to open-source GPUI, as well as the Zed editor itself. Right now, our plan is to keep certain collaborative features the editor as closed source, because we would like to build a business around those features. So before we open-source anything, we have to do some work to identify and cleanly separate those closed-source components.
- billconan 4y agoThank you! I'm also curious about the drawbacks of using harfbuzz on Mac and win? It seems that information/sample code using harfbuzz is easier to find on the internet, whereas coretext's document seems to be sketchy.
- maxbrunsfeld 4y agoWe went with CoreText on macOS because we wanted to make sure that text in Zed matched the look of other macOS apps. We'll probably end up using HarfBuzz for the Linux and Web versions, and possibly Windows too.
