EU watchdog: Online child abuse draft law creates ‘illusion of legality’
- LorenPechtel 4y agoFundamentally, you can't have both privacy and content filtering. CSAM is simply the reason da jour to give governments the right to snoop--and nothing guarantees they'll only use it for good or that the power will remain under their control.
- commandlinefan 4y ago> the power will remain under their control As Bruce Schneier says - "It is insufficient to protect ourselves with laws; we need to protect ourselves with mathematics."
- mindslight 4y agoIt's important to respect that stable societal freedom requires both. The mass use of cryptography and user-representing software is required so that the average person has a stake in privacy, so data silos aren't big juicy targets for politicians, and ultimately so that horrible laws aren't created against nebulous "bad people". And enlightened laws are required so that the average person will use cryptography, and to protect focused-on individuals from being persecuted.
- redeeman 4y agoand ALL evidence, of which there is plenty, says they WILL abuse it
- hulitu 4y ago> and nothing guarantees they'll only use it for good or that the power will remain under their control. They learned nothing from MI6, KGB, STASI or CIA. You are free until you are not and everything you said and wrote can and will be used against you.
- crmd 4y agoNow that the spectacular almost 25 year run of using “international terrorism” has run out of gas, it seems “CSAM” has been selected as the new boogeyman to justify mass surveillance in western democracies.

- jstarfish 4y ago> “CSAM” has been selected as the new boogeyman Nothing new about it, this is the same playbook they ran in 1992. Clipper chips, COPPA, etc. are all from the 90s.
