As an engineer, I hate writing. That being said, one of the best classes I took during my undergraduate studies was a class called “Technical Communication.” We learned how to write a good email, memo, and even technical instructions. For one of our big projects, we were given a box of Dots (gummy candy) and a box of toothpicks. We had to create a structure and then write instructions for another group of students to recreate said structure. Many students did poorly because they would simply write out their instructions like “put a toothpick in the side of the dot.” What does that even mean? They never established top or bottom, so side could be anything.
