(OP here) This started as a HN comment which turned into a tweetstorm which turned into this blog post. Happy to discuss further. Tons of stuff didn't fit, such as discussion of discrete/continuous mental models, how to convert between discrete/continuous stages and the relation to derivatives/integrals in Calculus, how to have pipelines of interleaved discrete/continuous stages and how to deal with backpressure semantics at the boundaries.
