I don't yet see or understand a clear way to separate it from what exists now. It seems like there's a lot of background knowledge necessary to do work in a particular field. I think they're also might be some ambiguity with "novelty in research". Scientists are not primarily looking for novelty alone, but a combination with ... 1. theories with better descriptive or prescriptive power 2. interesting applications
