With the price of SSDs so astoundingly low these days, I often install to a completely fresh drive and keep my old one around as a just-in-case backup of whatever I was previously running.
What I do is to put three Linux root partitions on the boot drive. One root is for my current "everyday" system. One root is for my current "rescue" system, which is usually the same distro and version as my "everyday" system. And one root is for my "experimental" system wherein I try out different distros or operating systems without affecting my two 'main' systems.
