Solar Geoengineering 'Only Option' to Cool Planet Within Years, UN Says
- PaulHoule 4y agoThe most likely path to this is to develop a large airplane with a flight ceiling in the 60,000-80,000 ft range, something like the U-2 or Global Hawk with huge wings and tanks full of liquid sulfur or SO2. Development of this would cost around $1B or so which is positively cheap. I was hoping one could modify a 767 (love that plane) for this role, but you really need an all new aircraft.
- brucethemoose2 4y agoIts also has a horrific effect over where you spray the SO2, and wherever you operate the massive airfleet. And its not $1B, its tens of billions per year as the most optimistic estimate, over a decade+. https://newatlas.com/environment/sai-polar-refreezing/ https://newatlas.com/environment/sai-polar-refreezing/ Its... truly terrible. Which I think people should emphasize when they correctly assert that its the least bad option so far. Also its not even realistic, because we still convince a large fraction of the educated first world that lifting a finger for climate change is even necessary.
