It always bothers me how dependent the popularity of a book is on something completely unrelated to its content. Book covers with illustrations / quirky text skew the impulsive perception of a book to an uncomfortable degree. Sci-fi is likely the biggest offender, followed by non-fiction books.
Children's book are almost okay with the way they're marketed. (auto)Biographies, too.
And the use of different fonts for every book adds yet another dimension to it, where I associate the text, the image and the meaning of the text all to different things, so the result is a hodgepodge mess that mostly just reduces my faith in the honesty of book covers.
