I don't know if I'm just growing old, lazy, angry, and/or stupid, but I genuinely can't get through a couple paragraphs of most writing these days.
San Diego, a pleasure dome but unequal? Aren't all pleasure domes unequal?
Los Angeles, "where the most common thing to catch on TV is a news story about the rich and powerful caging as many poor people as they possibly can"... I genuinely have no idea what this means. I spent several minutes trying to squint hard enough to get some meaning out of that, and I failed.
The Central Valley, where stupid backwards farmers have to pump ground water just to make ends meet! (Okay...? What's the point?)
San Francisco, where two opinions exist in a city of almost a million people! No other so-called "civilization" has some folks who are "strong on crime" and others who aren't! So backwards! Darn those "bros" and "queers"!
And finally, where I had to stop, before the meat of the article even began:
> His first book ... tracked late capitalism’s grinding effects on [his] own generation
Yeah, I'm out. Growing up in Palo Alto in the 80s and 90s must have really been the worst, man. I grew up very poor in Southern California, and thank god I'm at least aware enough not to think that was grinding. There is so little opportunity in the world - I really don't care about someone who grew up around a ton of it and managed to come out as a successful author who writes about how hard their own life was. Since I'm already being a cranky grouch: "late" capitalism? How are you so sure about everything?!
Worst part is that I get the feeling I might agree with some of the thrust of this article if I could stop rolling my eyes.
