That's another important point to keep in mind. A lot of US intellectual capital actually comes from China which is now a peer competitor for US. As US starts drumming up Yellow Peril 2.0, a lot of these people are going to go back to China. This is a very different situation from the Cold War when scientists and engineers who defected from USSR didn't want to go back. Large portion of Chinese people living in the west have a positive view of China, and as they see the rise of racism and prosecution then they'll just move to China where they can get same kinds of cushy jobs.
This is already happening by the way. A study found that at least 1,400 US-based ethnic Chinese scientists exited American institutions for mainland China

- credit_guy 4y agoYou are right and it is a bit sad. I was talking yesterday with a Chinese friend. If you are a highly educated Chinese in America, the present time is not the best of times. China is sliding towards autocracy. The rift between China and America widens every day. If you go back to visit your family, you are not 100% certain you'll get your US visa renewed. If you do, it might take two months. Add to that the fact that some part of the US population has anti-Asian sentiments (fortunately, the majority of the American people are solidly anti-racist, but the exceptions do bother you).
