This is likely competing with the Iridium 9603 modem, which offers relatively inexpensive service for their Short Burst Data protocol. If you're interested in this stuff, I highly recommend the RockBLOCK line of products from Rock7. It's only about $200, with around $20/month for service. I've used this for a few projects, and I've been really happy with the service. I even helped write a nodejs driver for it (https://github.com/dudewheresmycode/node-iridium-sbd https://github.com/dudewheresmycode/node-iridium-sbd).
