One of the funniest experiences we had visiting Canada was going for a couple of drinks after dinner. My partner was paying the waitress, she happened to have the exact change and counted it out only to be told in no uncertain terms that tipping was expected. In the UK I don't think I've ever tipped in a bar, except perhaps with bar staff we got to know well and it was usually in the form of drinks after their shift.
