40% of software engineers only want remote work. 99% of software engineers want a salary of at least $200k/year. Credit for a coworking place in case they get bored WFH too much. Credit for home internet. Credit for ordering Uber Food because they don't get free office food anymore. Ideally, the company also sends someone to their home office to clean it and to wash the laundry. Also, work should only be 4 days/week. Work should start at 10:30AM, then standup at 11am, then check email, 12PM is for Yoga/workout time, then lunch at 1pm. Finally, end work at 5 pm. Company should care about BLM. Company should care about environment. Let's also make a union for tech workers to negotiate with company.
Having worked in tech (Silicon Valley) for 10+ years, I've never seen a group of people who are as entitled as software engineers here.
- beecafe 4y agoSounds like you're just too bad at engineering to get stuff done on such a schedule. Why don't you get your brain checked out? Most normal people can easily get productive work done 4 days a few working 4 productive hours a day. If you think this is entitled, that must be since you are unable to achieve the same thing. In that case, I implore you to look for early signs of cognitive issues, since if you address that, you might find yourself able to enjoy things, get stuff done quickly, and not force yourself to burn out for someone else's paycheck.
- senttoschool 4y agoBro, why don't you just say what you're thinking in a more direct way. I think you're passive aggressively saying I'm a weak engineer but god engineers like yourself deserve the entitlement. Right?
- piaste 4y agoThe companies who bent over backwards to give them all of those benefits are not public services or non-profit altruists. They're ruthless capitalists and if they could get the same value by paying developers $20k with no benefits, they would. Hell, they keep trying to (and mostly failing). Despite that, they're still comfortably making billions when not trillions. So I'm not very inclined to weep for the abuse they suffer from their entitled workforce. The pay, the hours, the benefits, that's simply what work can look like when the power balance between labour and capital moves a little bit in favour of the former. If you're part of the 0.000001%, sure, ask yourself how to put a stop to such "entitlement". For everybody else, the question should be "hey, can we figure out a way to get there too?".
- hotpotamus 4y agoIf you add flying private and take away the time requirements, you'd have executives. Oh, and add a zero to the salary obviously, not including equity.
- TheCoelacanth 4y ago100% of CEOs and VCs want a bigger yacht. There's your more entitled group of people.
