Whiskey Fungus Fed by Jack Daniel’s Encrusts a Tennessee Town
- weatherlight 4y agoI wonder where this fungis' natural range is.
- MathMonkeyMan 4y ago> Ethanol vapor appears to be important in habitat determinant and Baudoinia species may occur in association with natural fermentative processes, such as seasonal fruit drops, bogs, natural composts, etc. [1] [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baudoinia_compniacensis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baudoinia_compniacensis

- thedailymail 4y ago"At a county commission meeting in November, Ms. Willis, the director of technical services, maintenance and barrel distribution at Jack Daniel’s, said that studies have shown that the fungus is not hazardous to human health and does not damage property. “Could it be a nuisance?” Ms. Willis said. “Yeah, sure. And it can easily be remedied by having it washed off.” She said the company would not agree, however, to power-wash homes, saying Jack Daniel’s could be held liable for any damage." So the distillery's response is: "It's not known to be damaging to property, so it's no more than an eyesore. However, washing it off could be damaging to property, so we won't do it." Surely the local homeowners can make the case that a coating of black fungus is damaging to property value.
- dzhiurgis 4y agoHeh. Just for useless perspective - I've seen places with 100yr old roof or a fence where washing off moss would be criminal.
- pvaldes 4y agoI would be more worried by the strange strike of six-legged fungus eaters in the area. Lack of slugs also.
