You're not alone. It's hard to find talent in the market when so many of the industry's best are inside of FAANG. It's hard to compete with FAANG's offers, but the opportunity for impact in your company is far greater than at FAANG. You need a platform engineer or SRE far more than FAANG needs yet another hire. That’s why I left Netflix and started consulting. I'm passionate about helping teams become self-sufficient in their platform and SRE work. I know from experience that it's possible to spin up on this work with the right mentorship. I was lucky enough to get that mentorship at Netflix, but I know most engineers don't have that opportunity. That’s my goal in consulting: to bridge the gap between FAANG and the rest of the market. My approach is to come in for 1-3 months and work with your team to explore a space they're struggling in. We'll put together a strategy, I'll handle the undifferentiated heavy lifting, and I'll mentor the team through the work that will help them grow the most. My goal in a contract is to work myself out of a job so that the engineers I work with become peers in the system we built together.
