I like this framing. It's not that aimless, excited newbies can ONLY make small things for their own use. It's just that doing so makes an important and easy-to-mess-up part of the process (i.e. collecting and synthesizing end user requirements and feedback) nearly automatic. But framing it this way suggests a natural progression to eventually making things for other people too.
