My partner is a linguist and practices languages on Duolingo.
She starts with it first thing in the morning and then before bed.
She is on a 1000+ day streak. Even during our vacations she makes sure she doesn’t break her streak, always trying go up the league.
It’s quite amazing how they’ve built that kind of stickiness into the product.
- sw104 4y agoI'm surprised a linguist would use Duolingo. Which languages does she use it for?
- watwut 4y agoNot him, but I had friend who worked as translator and literally lived from writing texts in foreign language. She used duolingo for like 6 languages, sometimes changing them as she felt like. She used other apps too tho, mostly for memorizing words.
- lock-the-spock 4y agoSomeone should show these people Anki or maybe ClozeMaster. So many more effective ways to practice vocabulary than the Duolingo way.
- watwut 4y agoThey do know about both. Afaik, Anki looks bad has better looking alternatives that allow you to memorize they have been excited over. Not sure what, never cared. Specifically Anki is just flashcards. It is boring rote memorization and not even effective way of learning. I think that comparatively few people will do it as a hobby. It is not that they don't know alternatives. It is that Duolingo has different purpose and they like it better.
- zabil 4y agoTo learn Spanish and German. French for practise. For Japanese however she has a dedicated teacher.
